If you were to pick up a book about hiking in New York you would probably come across the Bonticou Crag trail in the Shawangunks. The book would tell you that on your hike you would encounter a “short introduction to rock scrambling.” In reality, it is not an introduction. The ascent, a 300ft vertical wall of white quartz conglomerate talus (aka large rocks,) requires fearlessness, strength, and agility.
My hiking partner, pictured in the image above, was much better at the fearless part of the climb. (Actually he was better at all 3 of the requirements, but I made it without any help!) My legs were shaking a bit, but I would definitely do it again.
The “on top of the world” feeling you get while standing at the summit makes all the fear and difficulty worth it.

Dave is wearing that headlamp for a reason; I really did take this photo at the very end of the day. Camp was about 2 miles away from this lookout and once the sun fell behind those mountains we needed those little lights to make it back. (Unfortunately, we only had 3 headlamps to share among the 4 of us, but we made do.)
I can’t wait for summer weekends like this.
I just can’t wait.

It’s always summer in Photoshop (or whatever season you wish it to be.) I was thinking of lightning bugs when I was working on this piece and how we use to run around the yard catching them when we were young.

Here is another image I was working on tonight (it’s for a self portrait project on Flickr.. yes I’m in over my head with projects, but I love it.)

We drove past this friendly guy on our way back from visiting the lighthouse last weekend in Montauk. He trotted up to me as I approached the fence; happy to have a visitor. It was about 17°F that day so I thought he must be freezing standing outside, but as he got closer it appeared that he had grown a winter coat, which made me feel better.
He made for a beautiful subject standing there alone on his field, his brown coat standing out against the grey world around him. To emphasize this greyness, I took all the color out of the rest of the image, leaving only my subject to portray his natural color.

Inspired by the song “Carnival Town,” by Norah Jones.
“…up ‘n down, ferris wheel
tell me how does it feel,
to be so high
looking down here
Is it lonely?
lonely?
lonely?…”
